A SNEAK PEEK…
“Sometimes it's simply helping you make a better decision before the problem ever occurs.”
For many business owners, the answer seems obvious at first. You hire a managed service provider to fix computers, keep things running, and help when something breaks. Then, after a while, you start wondering if that's all there is.
If your relationship with your IT company consists of opening support tickets when something stops working, you may be missing out on one of the most valuable parts of managed services. I understand the frustration, as a business owner, you already have enough vendors in your life. The last thing you need is another company that only shows up when there is a problem and disappears the rest of the time.
The reality is that a good managed service company should be much more than a repair service. Of course, they should handle the basics, they should help keep your systems secure, they should monitor your network. They should assist when hardware fails, software acts up, or employees need support. Those are important services, and they should be done well.
But the best managed service providers don't just focus on today's problems. They help you think about tomorrow as well. Over the years, I've found that the healthiest client relationships look more like partnerships than vendor arrangements. Both organizations have a shared goal, your success becomes their success.
That means regular conversations about where your business is headed. Are you planning to hire more employees? Open another location? Replace aging equipment? Improve cybersecurity? Move to a different phone system? A good IT partner wants to know those things because technology decisions are often easier, less expensive, and less disruptive when they are planned ahead of time. For example, a conversation that starts with computer replacement planning may turn into budgeting discussions. A budgeting discussion may uncover concerns about cybersecurity. That cybersecurity discussion might reveal the need for better employee training or improvements to your backup system. None of those conversations happen when the relationship is limited to fixing broken computers.
A strong managed service provider should also be willing to help with areas that aren't strictly IT support. Business owners often ask about internet providers, VoIP phone systems, printers, building expansions, software choices, computer brands, and other technology-related decisions. While your IT provider may not sell every one of those products or services, they should be able to offer guidance and help you avoid costly mistakes.
Sometimes the most valuable advice a managed service company provides has nothing to do with fixing a problem. Sometimes it's simply helping you make a better decision before the problem ever occurs. That doesn't mean you need weekly meetings or endless planning sessions.
In fact, many smaller organizations do just fine with occasional strategic conversations. The key is making sure those conversations happen regularly enough that your IT company understands your goals, concerns, growth plans, and budget realities. If they understand where you're trying to go, they can help create a technology roadmap that supports that journey.
I should also be honest and say that not every business needs a highly involved strategic partnership. Some organizations have very simple technology needs and don't require extensive planning and that's perfectly fine. The important thing is recognizing the difference between a company that only responds to problems and a company that actively helps you prepare for the future.
One of the simplest ways to evaluate your current IT provider is to ask yourself a few questions.
Do they understand your business goals?
Do they meet with you regularly to discuss future needs?
Do they help you budget for upcoming technology expenses?
Do they provide guidance beyond computer repair?
Do they look for opportunities to help, or do they only engage when something breaks? The answers can tell you a lot. At the end of the day, technology is simply a tool that helps your business achieve its goals. The right managed service provider understands that. Their role isn't just to keep servers running and passwords working. Their role is to help your organization use technology wisely, safely, and strategically.
A true partnership doesn't ask, How can we avoid getting involved? It asks, How can we help? That might be a good question to consider the next time you meet with your IT provider. Are they simply supporting your technology, or are they helping support your business?
That’s how I see it, anyway, and I’d enjoy hearing how you see it. None of this is a sales pitch. It’s just the kind of thing I’d talk through with you if we were sitting across the table. If it raised a question, or you think I have it wrong, I want to hear about it.
My door is always open. Whether you want to talk this through or just say hello, you can reach me anytime.
