Data and Critical System Backups: Avoiding Needless Downtime.

A SNEAK PEEK…
“Just having backups is not enough. You have to know they actually worked.”
Most people assume backups are just kind of happening in the background and that everything is fine. And sometimes that’s true… until you actually need them. That’s usually when the real test happens.
So when someone asks NSU how we handle backups, we usually explain it like this.
We try to think about backups in layers, not just as a single thing. Because if you’re relying on one copy in one place, there’s still a lot that can go wrong. What we’re really trying to build is a system where no single issue can take everything down.
Throughout the day, your data is being backed up to a local device. That’s important because if something happens, we can move to it quickly. We’re not waiting on downloads or pulling things back from somewhere far away. Speed matters when your team is sitting there and can’t work.
After hours when you are relaxing, those backups are also being sent up to the cloud. And not just to one place. We make sure they’re stored in multiple locations that are geographically separate. That way, if something bigger happens, like a regional outage or a major issue with one data center, your data is still safe somewhere else.
But here’s the part a lot of people don’t realize.
Just having backups is not enough. You have to know they actually worked.
So every day, our team is checking those backups. We rotate technicians so more than one person is responsible for verifying things, and we’re not just trusting a report that says “success.” We actually look at it, like pulling up a screenshot and confirming that everything completed the way it should have.
It’s a small step, but it makes a big difference. Because when something does go wrong, that’s not the time to find out your backup didn’t run correctly.
And then there’s the scenario nobody wants, but every business needs to be prepared for. Let’s say a server fails. Not a small issue, but a real failure.
In that situation, our goal is not just to recover your data. It’s to keep your business running.
Because we have that local backup device, we can bring that device online and have it act as your server temporarily. Your team can keep working while we figure out what caused the issue and fix the actual production server the right way.
So instead of being down for a long period of time, it becomes more of a short interruption that we can manage.
At the end of the day, that’s really what backups are about. It’s not just about saving files. It’s about keeping your business moving, even when something unexpected happens.
And if I leave someone with one thought, it’s usually this.
If something went down today, how confident are you that you could be back up and running quickly?
If that answer isn’t clear, that’s where it makes sense to take a closer look. Not to scare anyone, just to make sure there aren’t any gaps that could turn a small issue into a bigger one.
That’s how I see it, anyway, and I’d enjoy hearing how you see it. None of this is a sales pitch. It’s just the kind of thing I’d talk through with you if we were sitting across the table. If it raised a question, or you think I have it wrong, I want to hear about it.
My door is always open. Whether you want to talk this through or just say hello, you can reach me anytime.
